14 Jul 2008 - School Council Year Review 2007-8

Interview with school council

We’re just coming to the end of the final school term at Tenterden Infants School , and now is the time we look upon some of the highlights of another wonderful, successful school year.

One of the most integral elements to the success of this school is gauging the opinions of the pupils themselves, and putting the ideas they have into practise. We feel that the best way to interact with the pupils is through the school council, which consists of four representatives from year 1 and another four from year two who are able to put forward the ideas of their fellow students, as well as gathering new ideas from adults about important issues which are likely to concern them in the future.

The school council meet once or twice a month to discuss improvements which could be made in the school, making sure that the students themselves have a say in the future of our school.

One of these issues is the environment, and the future of our planet. This was one of the key issues discussed on the school council’s meetings this year. The children’s ideas were put forward on paper and formed part of a large display which can be seen in the atrium. Ideas included turning the tap off when brushing teeth to save water, recycling as much waste as possible and turning off lights to save on energy. The children also thought of some conservative ideas, such as walking to school and preventing the cutting down of trees “because birds need a home!”

The school council also learnt about the importance of becoming an eco-school, and how saving energy in the school can not only save money, but also contributes to saving our planet and making the world a better place for their generation.

The school council also played their part in some of the major events of the school year. The school council helped arrange the flowers at the in school Easter service, playing their part in helping this school look and feel a better place.

One of the most enjoyable activities which the school council participated in was discussing what made a good school council. This involved meeting numerous other councils from the area, while having a lot of fun in the process. From this experience, all members of the council decided they were an excellent school council!

However, despite the many important issues discussed, as with everything at such an early age, having fun is one of, if not the most valuable elements of being a school councillor. When asked what was the best part of being in the school council, Thea replied “eating biscuits!” while Petra really enjoyed going to the staff room for meetings.

At the end of the interview all of the school councillors said that they really enjoyed being a school councillor and had had “loads of fun” in the process. Overall, it seems that being part of this group has been a valuable experience for the members of the school council, and is something which has given them access to many valuable skills which can be developed in the future, while having great fun in the process.

The school councillors interviewed were Petra , Clara, Thea and Harry from Year 2.
