15 Jul 2008 - School trips to Rare Breeds and Sea Life Centres

School Outings

A loud and excited Group of children from every year of the school came to talk about the fantastic adventures they had been on with Tenterden Infants School this year. The children have been on two major trips this year, to the Rare Breeds Centre near Woodchurch and to the Sea Life Centre at Hastings . All of the children said that they really enjoyed their school trips this year, and were very excited by all the wonderful new creatures they had discovered.

The trip to Hastings was an action packed (and exhausting) day for all involved. This included a trip to the beach and a full tour of the Sea Life Centre. The first activity the children participated in was a quick trip to the beach. All of the children went to trawl the beach for anything interesting they could find. Amongst the waves and pebbles were crabs and numerous fish, which if anything wet their appetite for the further adventures to come on this day.

Next on the agenda was the main part of the visit, a trip to the Sea Life Centre. Here the children became marine explorers (albeit inside a glass tunnel) discovering some of the weird and wonderful creatures of the deep. Amongst these were Octopuses, starfish, sharks, turtles and stingrays. Despite all of this being very exciting, the children were all particularly amused by one fact in particular. When sharks were mentioned, the children responded almost in unison to tell me that ‘every year 10 people are killed by a shark attack, while 150 people a year are killed when a coconut falls on their head!’ As Oliver put it “You should be more scared of coconuts than sharks!” Other creatures the children discovered at the Sea Life Centre included tube fish and sea anemones, as was very impressively pronounced by Benedict!

A Black Finned Shark – Not so scary after all!

The second trip of the year for children in Foundation was a trip to the Rare Breeds Centre near Woodchurch. After a short and painless journey, the children arrived ready to explore the centre. In a similar fashion to that at the Sea Life Centre, the children were allowed to explore and discover creatures they had never seen before, amongst these were a golden eagle, different breeds of rabbits, birds and cows as well as some wild boar.

The children also had time to play in the animal themed play area at the centre, where they had enormous amounts of fun. The children’s geographical skills were challenged by the use of a map to navigate their way around the park to try and find certain animals around the park.

The children had so much fun in so many different ways that none of them could agree upon what was their favourite part of any trip this year. Aileen said that she was “very excited when (I) saw the stingray!” Ethan was amazed by the “colourful clownfish” while Benedict really enjoyed the animal nursery at the Rare Breeds Centre. Thomas however, “loved the Black-Finned Sharks”.

Everybody, both students and teachers said that they had really enjoyed themselves and had had two great days out!
