Multi skills carnival- Cranbrook  Rugby Club 2008

This year, Mrs. Cripps and Mrs. Chapman took 20 Year 2’s to participate in the annual multi skills carnival held at Cranbrook Rugby Club. The initiative is the brain child of the Tunbridge Wells School Sports Partnership (TWSSP), who are seeking innovative new ways to get young children active.

This year, each participating school were representing a different sporting nation, with representatives from England, Australia, Italy, France, Wales, Scotland, Argentina, South Africa and New Zealand. This year, Tenterden Infants School represented New Zealand at the festival, and helped enhance the school’s excellent reputation of having children who embody the word sportsmanship, and the belief that, as Lola said “its not the winning, it’s the taking part that counts.”

The children took part in a number of different activities, including the improvement of Golf, Football and Rugby skills. Another activity the children took part in was the assault course. The assault course was designed to improve the children’s agility, balance and co-ordination, or ABC’s.

The children I interviewed all remembered the bumps and bruises they had received on the day, but looked back upon them with pride, particularly George, who was very proud of being hit on the head with a rugby ball!

One of the parts of the day which the children enjoyed the most was the dressing up competition, which although they didn’t win, all of the children really enjoyed. They also spoke with great enthusiasm about the banner they created to show they were representing New Zealand.

In fact they took part in so many exciting activities; they found it difficult to decide which part they enjoyed the most, despite the dank and miserable weather they experienced on the day. Ultimately, Danielle and India both looked back fondly upon the football skills activity, Lola particularly enjoyed the Golf; while George decided he enjoyed the rugby the most. Rachel enjoyed it all so much that she couldn’t decide which activity she enjoyed the most!

When asked whether or not they would like to do something similar in the future if the opportunity arose, the children responded with a unanimous “YES!” This was a clear enough sign to me that the children had thoroughly enjoyed themselves on the day, and that overall, the initiative of getting more children to participate in, and enjoy sporting activities in the area had been a notable success.

Children interviewed were Lola (Class 6), Danielle (Class 9), George (Class 7), India (Class 9) and Rachel (Class 6).
