Tennis with the TWSSP

Every week, Tenterden Infants School receives a visitor from the Tunbridge Wells School Sports Partnership (TWSSP) for a session of Tennis, and their excellent quality coaching is hopefully laying down the roots for future Wimbledon champions!

The sessions involve many different exercises which aim to improve the children’s tennis ability. Believe it or not, not all of the exercises the children do involve the use of a tennis racquet. Many of the exercises used are similar to those used in multi skills activities. These include agility exercises, such as jumping from side to side to move tennis balls from one side to the other, throwing the ball in the air in a controlled manner and bouncing the ball while keeping it under control.

Indeed, control is a word upon which a lot of emphasis is placed. This is because it is very important for the children to be able to control the ball as well as their racquet when playing tennis.

The children then moved on to racquet skills, which consisted of forehands, backhands and volleys. The children all managed to perform this task without great difficulty, and some displayed some excellent technique for such young children.

It was very clear to me from the reaction received by the coaches from the children that they were having a wonderful time and were really grateful for the opportunity to display and improve their skills. As a school we would like to thank the TWSSP and in particular Vicky Benbow, who has put a lot of time and effort into organising activities for the children, and is now going to tour the world! We wish her the best of luck on her travels. Both children and coaches have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and this is another P.E initiative the school will look to be a part of again in the future.
