18 Jul 2008 - Leavers Concert Report

Leavers Concert 2008

“See you again quite soon!” was the message from this year’s leavers as they bid an emotional farewell to Tenterden Infants School. The hard work of both the children and the teachers who organised it clearly paid off as they gave an excellent rendition of the story of ‘Stella the Starfish’.

Before the performance, however, there was a presentation showing all of the memories of the past year, to the bright and cheery tones of High School Musical and ‘Under the Sea’. This was followed by some of the children’s fondest memories of their time at Tenterden Infants School, ranging from the creation of friendships to cows licking the children’s hands!

The children then chose to show off some of the skills they had learnt in the past three years here. This included the playing of ‘hot cross buns’ on the recorder and an impressive performance of ‘Sur la Pont d’Avignon’ by the French class.

Following the memories and displays of both linguistic and musical talent came the much anticipated play, ‘Stella the Starfish’. The children have been learning about the seashore this year, and it was decided the play should have a marine tone to it. The intriguing tale of Stella began with an introduction to key figures Steven and Sophie, who it turned out were to aid Stella in a search for her family. The trio were transported to an underwater world via a magic conch shell. Firstly they encountered some seaweed, which performed an enchanting and mystical dance. They soon came across some cheerful clownfish, who danced and sung with great panache, and looked like they were really enjoying themselves, as displayed by the ‘ha ha ha ha!’ and ‘he he he he!’ implemented into their song. Unfortunately these lively clownfish could not help Stella on her quest for her family.

The next creatures Sophie, Steven and Stella encountered on their journey were a shoal of sardines, but despite their song, they could not help Stella. Next up was the grumpy Terry the Turtle, as excellently played by Vincent, and a group of jellyfish. But not even Terry could help Stella. The trio were starting to become desperate, and Stella was starting to think she would never re-discover her family. Not even the elegant rainbow fish which they next encountered could tell Stella the whereabouts of her family. However, they did know of a very wise shark that may have been able to help them.

Sid the Shark appeared in the darkest of the myriad different costumes on display. Despite his dark and aggressive appearance, particularly with his very dark sunglasses on, Sid proved very helpful in Stella’s quest for her family, and gave her a mysterious riddle to solve to eventually find her family.

Extraordinarily, Stella’s family were exactly where Sid had said they would be, and Stella was finally reunited with her family. The play ended with an excellent ‘underwater dance’ by some of the other seas creatures in the play, and a final rendition of the ‘Stella the Starfish song’.

However, this was not the climax of the performance. Still to come was the Leavers Song, which has been the climax to the Leavers Concert since time began! (or so it seems). It was to this tune that the children bid a final farewell to the audience, some of whom were in tears as they exited the stage to a well deserved round of applause.
